About

Religion is derived from the Latin Religare, which means to bind together or re-unite. The term Re-unite shows in itself that, only that one re-unites who is separated from someone. Here, the soul is separated from the Supreme Soul who is called Yahweh, Ahura Mazda, God, Allah, Parmatma, Wahguru etc. by various religions.

So Religion is primarily, a path, leading to the re-unification process. Many Prophets, Messengers of God, Mahatmas have shown many Paths from time to time, which are embedded in various scriptures.

Sikhism or more accurately Gurmat (ਗੁਰਮਤਿ), is a distinct Path leading to that goal. Sri Guru Nanak Sahib and his nine descendents are the Mentors of this distinct religion, who lived as Humans from 1469 AD to 1708 AD. Today, this Path is shown primarily in two Scriptures – Guru Granth Sahib and Sri Dasam Granth Sahib. Other Sikh Scriptures are expositions of these two. Some of the Primary features are:

  1. God is one and called by many names, primarily Akal Purakh.
  2. He only is the Creator of this Cosmos.
  3. Man is His supreme creation of 84 lakhs of species.
  4. Human birth is a golden chance given to the creature to attain oneness with Akal Purakh.
  5. The Path leading to the Goal is shown in the two Primary Scriptures.
  6. The Path leading to re-unification is to follow the path shown by the Guru only and no personal intellect or understanding, called Matti (ਮਤਿ). That is why this Path is given the name Gurmat.
  7. To elaborate precisely, Gurmat is primarily Sadhu Sangat, Nam Simran and secondarily addition of pious deeds (whether leading family life or life that of an ascetic) along with. Sadhu is Guru, who allots Gur-mantra to be meditated upon and whose Seva (service) leads to showering His Grace by means of which one is able to ascend to various stages of Nam Simran, which, subsequently, with the Final Grace of the Guru, leads to re-unification with Akal Purakh.

As a Panthic religion, the Gurmantra is allotted by the five beloved ones, called Panj Pyaras (ਪੰਜ ਪਿਆਰੇ), instead of one-person-Guru. This Initiation Ceremony is called Khande ki Pahul (ਖੰਡੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਹੁਲ).
